Don't Forget Your Breathalyser!

Interesting?

From 1st July 2012 it will be a legal requirement to carry a breathalyser kit whether you're driving a car or riding a motorbike; [unless your bike is under 50cc]

Single use breathalyser kits will satisfy the requirements & fines of eleven Euro's start from November 2012

IAM release:

The IAM previously reported that from 1 July this year all drivers would need to carry a breathalyser kit, as French drivers will have to, but new information dictates that this €11 fine is applicable to all road users including motorcyclists, but excluding mopeds.

With a start date for the new measure of 1 July 2012, the rules will apply to anyone travelling to or through France by motor vehicle in the summer holiday season, even just for a day trip. This measure won’t actually be enforced until the 1 November 2012, giving road users time to prepare for the change.

Single-use breathalyser kits will satisfy the requirement. The legal limit in France is 50 mg per 100 ml of blood, lower than in the UK (the UK limit is 80mg). They cost between £1 and £2 and they will be available at ferry and tunnel terminals for crossings to France. It is intended that people will be able to test themselves to check whether or not they are over the French limit.

The IAM is advising all road users travelling in France to have at least two breathalysers at all times, so that if one is used you still have one to produce for the police if you are stopped.

Anyone driving in France is already required to carry a warning triangle and a fluorescent safety vest to use in an emergency. Motorcyclists should carry extra bulbs. Additionally UK motorists and motorcyclists must display a GB plate, and cars should have their headlights adjusted to the right.

IAM director of policy and research Neil Greig said: “The new French rule is a genuine attempt to reduce the number of alcohol related-accidents. France’s lower limit means it’s very easy to be over the limit the morning after as well. As always, the best advice for road users is not to drink and drive at all.”

WVAM France Weekend 2012

WVAM France Weekend 2012

Now that a whole three weeks have passed since the last one, it is the perfect time to get yourself booked on to next years’ club extravaganza trip – this time to L’Aigle in Normandy, a well established (and much enjoyed) venue from previous excursions.

The official club entourage will leave these shores on the morning of Friday 15th June, departing L’Aigle for the return journey on Monday 18st June.

All travellers must be fully paid up Full Members, Associates of Friends of WVAM (Friend is a non-riding social member).

Getting There and Back

We’ll be crossing the Channel via Eurotunnel from Folkestone to Calais. Prices are as yet unavailable, but a return booking at this time of the year (June) is likely to be between £40-50 depending how early the bookings are made, this year we negotiated a group booking at £40 per bike – as someone once said, “Book Early”.

Nearer the time, run leaders will be nominated/volunteered to lead groups from various points in WVAM land so everybody on the trip has the option of travelling in a group. These groups will be graded as social runs are – leisurely/moderate/brisk (see Social Runs section of website for definitions). When completing your booking form, you will be asked to state which category of group you feel you will be most comfortable in. We want everybody to enjoy every aspect of this trip so it important you select the appropriate group, and are fully aware/familiar with the Social Run Guidelines. This is also applicable when choosing social rides on the Saturday and Sunday.

Accommodation

We will stay at the Hotel Du Dauphin on a half board basis (bed, breakfast and evening meal) See here for hotel details. http://www.hoteldudauphin.free.fr/

The cost per person per night based on 2 people sharing a twin or double room will be €54-60.

Single rooms will be limited and will be priced at approximately €70 per person per night.

This will also include bottles of house wine served at the dinner table, during dinner.

We will have dinner all together each evening in the hotel’s main dining room. Entertainment of some kind will be provided on at least one night, probably Saturday, although every night is usually entertaining.

This is a family run hotel that’ve always been willing to go the extra mile to help us on previous visits. Their restaurant and brasserie are renowned throughout the area so a gastronomic feast is inevitable – on three occasions!

Nearby Attractions

Social rides are advertised by the run leaders the evening before. In previous years trips have been to;

Honfleur - http://www.ot-honfleur.fr/Accueil,0,0,1.html a great location for moules frites overlooking the harbour. A beautiful town, with cobbled streets and seafood restaurants galore.

Falaise – the castle in Falaise is the birthplace of William the Conqueror, a chap most famous for being the first man to be tagged ‘silly Billy’ after a fall from his horse resulting in his death.

Bayeux - visit the tapestry or visit the British Cemetery, the largest WW2 cemetery of its kind in France. http://www.battlefieldsww2.50megs.com/baye...ar_cemetery.htm

Omaha Beach – one of the Normandy landing sites on June 6th 1944. A visit there can often help put life into perspective…moving.

Giverny – a visit to Claude Monet’s house and garden. Not only was he a leading impressionist artiste of his time, he had green fingers too.

Swiss Normandy – the best biking roads in Normandy set in stunning countryside with rolling hills and quite a few trees.

If you fancy a day off the bike, L’Aigle has an Aqua Park and the third largest food market in France, offering local produce, including the local tipple of choice, Calvados.

Bookings

Please complete the application form. As you can see, a £50 per person hotel deposit is required to secure a booking, and payment details are included on the booking form. In the past we have filled this hotel and have had to use a satellite hotel nearby for the overspill, but we will not have that option for this trip.

Book early and don’t be disappointed as bookings will be on a first come – first served basis. A booking will not be considered confirmed until both the form and deposit are received.

As stated on the booking form, please complete the form on your PC and return via email to wvam_france@wvam.org.uk

Once again, only electronic forms are being accepted this year to minimise paperwork.

Payment can be made electronically (see Stuart's post further down this thread), by cash or cheque (payable to WVAM France) in person to either Stuart Robertson or Gary George (seek us out at Club Night or Observed Sundays), or by post to;

WVAM Treasurer
7 Slyfield Green
Guildford
Surrey
GU1 1RL

Please do not post cash.

Bon voyage mes amis...
